When the New Moon Service Is Observed

Celestial Church of Christ observes the New Moon Service on the first Thursday of every month, at parishes worldwide.

It is a special devotional and doctrinal service, led by the Holy Spirit, that continues into the early morning hours.

The Purpose of the Service

The New Moon Service marks the transition from the month that has passed into the month ahead. Celestians gather to give thanks for God's faithfulness during the previous month and to commit the whole of the coming month into His hands.

This reflects trust in God as the author and finisher of all things.

The Two Parts of the Service

The service is observed in two parts.

Part One

The first part features worship through praise and dance. Members then kneel to make their requests known to the Lord.

Part Two

The second part begins at midnight, with hands lifted in worship. Seven elders offer prayers during this portion of the service, and members receive prophecies and encounter God.

Worship in Lowliness Before God (Ezekiel 46:1–6)

The New Moon Service is regarded as being as important as Sunday worship — a service loaded with meaningful acts of reverence and adoration.

The Shepherd and the whole flock lift up their hands together, acknowledging the sovereignty of God, then bow down, and finally kneel with their faces to the ground, foreheads touching the ground.

No Sitting on Chairs or Benches During the Service (Nehemiah 8:6)

This worship is conducted in absolute lowliness before God. During the service, worshippers do not sit on chairs or benches; when seated, they may sit on the floor.

The New Month Before God

At its center, the New Moon Service is a time of thanksgiving for the month that has passed and of committing the month ahead into God's hands. It is a time of prayer and worship in which the Church comes before God with trust, gratitude, and devotion. For those unfamiliar with Celestial Church of Christ, the service also includes distinctive forms of worship and congregational participation that reflect the Church's established order.
